IDENTIFYING THE HOLY BIBLE
Introduction—This study provides scriptural “substance” and “evidence” (Hebrews 11:1) that the King James Bible, also known as the Authorized Version, is God’s incorruptible word in the English language, the word that God promised to preserve for all generations (Psalm 12:6-7). I am extremely thankful and greatly blessed to be “fully persuaded” (Romans 4:21) that I can hold the word of God in my hand, read it, and trust it will all my heart. I am in complete agreement with the psalmist, who declared: “Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it” (Psalm 119:140). By faith, God’s word “is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). As I walk in the light of God’s word I enjoy a continual fellowship with the Lord (1John 1:7) “as seeing him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27). May the same blessings be yours by faith.
TRANSLATION OF THE AUTHORIZED VERSION
Pure and preserved for ever!—The Holy Bible declares: “The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever” (Psalm 12:6-7). The following information comes from a paper titled: THE AV 1611: Purified Seven Times by Dr. Laurence M. Vance posted on Biblebelievers.com:
‘James IV of Scotland became James I king of England after the death of Elizabeth in 1603. In January of 1604 the new king held the Hampton Court Conference. During the conference the Puritan president of Corpus Christi College, John Reynolds, ‘moved his Majesty, that there might be a new translation of the Bible, because those which were allowed in the reigns of Henry the eighth, and Edward the sixth, were corrupt and not answerable to the truth of the Original.
In 1604 King James nominated fifty-four men to take part in the work of translation, but only forty-seven men actually took part of the work. These men established fifteen rules to guide the translators. The first rule was: ‘The ordinary Bible read in the Church, commonly called the Bishops Bible, to be followed, and as little altered as the Truth of the original will permit.’ And the fourteenth rule was: ‘These translations to be used when they agree better with the Text than the Bishops Bible: Tindoll’s, Matthews, Coverdale’s, Whitchurch’s [known as the Great Bible], and the Geneva Bible.
And thus we have our answer. The seven English versions that make the English Bibles up to and including the Authorized Version fit the description in Psalm 12:6 of the words of the Lord being “purified seven times” are [as identified by the translators] Tyndale’s, Matthew’s, Coverdale’s, the Great Bible (printed by Whitechurch), the Geneva Bible, the Bishops’ Bible, and the King James Bible…The Wycliffe, Taverner, and Douay-Rheims Bibles, whatever merits any of them may have, are not part of the purified line God “authorized,” of which the King James Authorized Version is God’s last one—purified seven times.’ In addition to this pertinent truth, the translators worked for seven years [“times” (Revelation 12:14)]! And ‘seven’ is the number of perfection: completion in the scriptures.
Which Bible is holy?—Not long after I was saved while reading ‘The Living Bible’ I bought a ‘New International Version.’ I began to see that even these two ‘bibles’ had different words. One day I heard a Bible believing pastor on the radio who preached with authority like none I had yet heard. I located and began to attend his church. The church believed that the King James Bible was the pure and preserved word of God. I was told that the LORD only has one pure and preserved Holy Bible in the English language. If this is true, then all of the other English bibles titled: ‘Holy Bible’ must contain corrupted words! Even as early as thirty years after the resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ, the apostle Paul wrote: “For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ” (2Corinthians 2:17; 4:2).
God commanded his prophet Jeremiah—“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jeremiah 33:3; 29:12; Isaiah 48:6; Psalm 145:18). The “great and mighty things” speak of the secrets and mysteries that are inaccessible to the natural understanding and wisdom of man; things that only God can reveal and teach to believers through “the Holy Ghost” (1Corinthians 2:11-14; Isaiah 28:9-13) and by the scriptures (Amos 3:7; Ephesians 3:5). I began to call upon the LORD to show me by his word which ‘bible’ was The Holy Bible.
Trust ONLY in God’s word and Spirit—Many scriptures promise blessings to the man who obeys the LORD’S commands to trust him and his word: “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is” (Jeremiah 17:7); “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6); “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes” (Psalm 118:8-9). We who believe on the Son God have the witness of the Spirit of God in ourselves (1John 5:8-10), “And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth” (1John 5:6; Romans 8:14-16). The “holy scriptures” (2Timothy 3:15) give wisdom and eliminate confusion. Today with all the different books labeled: “Holy Bible,” how can the Holy Bible that God promised to keep pure and true and preserved (Psalm 12:6-7) be identified? Much confusion results when we turn to the works and words of men for direction and evidence. Most so called Bible scholars believe that God preserved his pure word in the original manuscripts, but not in any bible we have today. This does not help anyone, for no one today has seen or possesses any of the original manuscripts!
Put no confidence in any man—The scriptures have taught me that I could not safely trust in any man, even the men of the church I attended. Proud men with their very limited and finite minds will not believe God’s words unless they can understand and explain how God performs his miracles and keeps his promises. Therefore, when they cannot understand what God’s word clearly declares, these men change God’s word so that it will agree with their natural understanding. This is an example of the foolish wisdom that comes forth from the pride of the devil and his children alike (John 8:44), for “the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God” (1Corinthians 3:19). When Lucifer with foolish pride said in his heart that he would exalt himself and be like the most High, the LORD said unto him, “Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit” (Isaiah 14:12-15). The scriptures have much to say about the pride of men. Even a “proud look” (Proverbs 6:17) is “an abomination [an extremely hated thing]” (Proverbs 6:16) to the LORD! “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Proverbs 16:18-19; 18:12; 29:23; Isaiah 2:12; 1Peter 5:5).
Jesus told “the Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). By believing and obeying the scriptures, the believer is made free from confusion and deception! The word of God says that we born again believers are “the circumcision [Colossians 2:11], which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3). The scripture declares: “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered” (Proverbs 28:26)! “Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD” (Jeremiah 17:5). Therefore, “Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge” (Proverbs 19:27).
David’s words are true!—David, through whom the Spirit of the LORD spoke (2Samuel 23:1-2), and who was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22; 1Samuel 13:14), declared: “All men are liars” (Psalm 116:11)! This agrees with all the scriptures concerning the natural state of mankind.
All natural men are wicked—Speaking of the first Adam’s offspring, the scripture says: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9; see also Isaiah 64:6; Psalm 14:3; 53:3l; Romans 3:10-12). All these declarations are absolutely true with one exception: the Lord Jesus Christ, who is not the offspring of the first Adam, but is “the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18), “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).
Therefore all wicked men are liars!—“The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies” (Psalm 58:3; 1Timothy 4:1-4). The lives of wicked and ungodly men are spent, “turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ” (Jude 1:4). In his letter to the church at Pergamos the Lord said that they were holding onto the false doctrines of Balaam and the Nicolaitans (Revelation 2:14-15). Had they believed only the words of God they could have avoided this error.
GOD ANSWERED MY PRAYER
God’s answer was found in the scriptures—The Lord Jesus said unto his disciples, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened” (Luke 11:9-10). So, in light of these precious promises, and being assured by faith that there must still exist today a perfect Holy Bible (Psalm 12:6-7), I called unto the LORD and asked him to identify the true Holy Bible to me. Just as I expected the answer God gave me was found in the scriptures, the only sure way for a man to know that the words are from God.
The Holy Bible identified and authenticated—The Lord Jesus told his apostles, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth [“the Comforter” (John 15:26); “the Holy Ghost” (John 16:13-14)], is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you” (John 16:13-14). When I read these verses, the words “He shall glorify me” really stood out to me. I understood that the true, pure, and preserved Holy Bible would be identified as the Bible which most glorifies our Lord Jesus Christ.
A famine of God’s words—GOD prophesied through Amos of these days, and said: “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it” (Amos 8:11-12). Jesus asked, “Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 8:18; Romans 10:17). We know that he will find the Holy Bible still on earth, for God has promised to preserve it for all generations (Psalm 12:6-7). We also know that there will at least be a remnant of believers who will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air when he comes at “the first resurrection” (Revelation 20:5-6)—“the resurrection of life” (John 5:29), to gather his church unto himself (1Thessalonians 4:16-18; 1Corinthians 15:51-53; Revelation 20:5-6).
Many Bible corrupters—Mankind has corrupted the word of God from the beginning of time. Eve was the first to add to God’s word (Genesis 3:3). Speaking of the children of Israel the Lord said: “But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels” (Psalm 81:11-12)
No profit in false prophets—Six hundred years before Christ the LORD declared: “A wonderful [strange; astonishing] and horrible thing is committed in the land; The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?” (Jeremiah 5:30-31). Later the LORD said: “How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith. Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:26-32).
False teachers bring damnable heresies—The apostle Peter warned the church: “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not” (2Peter 2:1-3)
THE PURE COMPARED TO THE CORRUPT
The KJB compared to the NKJV—Because the New King James Version (NKJV) is probably the least offensive of all the corrupted modern bibles I have chosen it for comparison. While it is true that all bibles glorify the Lord Jesus Christ to some degree, the following examples will demonstrate how the King James Holy Bible stands far above the NKJV in glorifying the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Ghost has written authenticating evidence in the words of his Holy Bible, which unmistakably distinguish it from all other English language bibles. This evidence shows that God’s true, pure, and preserved word far exceeds any other English language bible in GLORIFYING the Lord Jesus Christ.
God esteems his word above his name—Speaking to God about his pure and perfect word, David wrote by inspiration, “for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name” (Psalm 138:2). However most of the modern bibles reword the verse to entirely change its strong meaning. For example, the Revised Standard Version has: ‘I bow down toward thy holy temple and give thanks to thy name for thy steadfast love and thy faithfulness; for thou hast exalted above everything thy name and thy word’ (Psalm 138:2 RSV). The name of Jesus is the only name “under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). But the devil inspired bible corrupters are promoting “another Jesus” (2Corinthians 11:4), and many “false christs” (Matthew 24:5, 11; 7:13; Mark 13:6)! There is only one infallible way to identify and distinguish the “Lord’s Christ” (Luke 2:26) from false christs, and that is through faith in the pure and preserved “record that God gave of his Son” (1John 5:10), the “record” that God has magnified above all his name (Psalm 138:2 KJB)!
A sure word of prophecy—Writing of the time on the mountain when Peter, James, and John witnessed the majesty of the transfigured Christ and heard the voice of the Father speak out of the cloud that covered them, Peter wrote: “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2Peter 1:16-21). Peter declared that the word of God is “more sure” than seeing visions and hearing audible voices! But the New King James Version contradicts the word of God by saying: ‘And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts’ (2Peter 1:19). In other words, the NKJV is saying that the word of God is confirmed by what he saw and heard! This is absurd! Man’s only trustworthy source of faith is the Holy Bible!
The following examples illustrate how the words of the KJV are changed by the NKJV. The word(s) of the King James Bible [KJV] are given first in bold type, then after the symbol [≥] the changed word(s) of the New King James Version [NKJV] are given in italics. Then the scripture reference(s) are given.
“Touch me not” ≥ ‘Do not cling to me’ (John 20:17). This is Jesus’ command to Mary Magdalene at the tomb after his resurrection. The NKJV allows for touching, but not clinging. When Jesus said, “Touch me not,” he meant what he said! As our great high priest he could not be defiled with human hands before he entered into the holy place in heaven to obtain eternal redemption for us (Hebrews 9:12)! After his great atoning work was accomplished the Lord allowed his disciples to hold him (Matthew 28:9).
His “Son Jesus” ≥ ‘His Servant Jesus’ (Acts 3:13). Jesus is God’s Son: not his servant. The context of these verses is the resurrection of God’s only begotten Son (Acts 3:15, 26) Jesus Christ, and not of his servant Israel (Isaiah 44:21).
“Temperance” ≥ ‘self-control’ (Acts 24:25). Temperance is a “fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22-23), but ‘self-control’ is clearly a work of the flesh. Even unjust men are said to be “selfwilled” (2Peter 2:10).
“Preaching” ≥ ‘message’ (1Corinthians 1:18). In the perilous times of these last days God said that men would heap to themselves “teachers having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2Timothy 4:3-4). The preaching of doctrine (2Timothy 4:2) is what men have turned away from, as they have been turned unto the fables found in the modern bibles: “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God” (1Corinthians 1:18).
“Through a glass darkly” ≥ ‘in a mirror dimly’ (1Corinthians 13:12). Men cannot see “through” a mirror! The truth is that we now see the Lord dimly through the word of God as we read, study, and meditate. When we meet the Lord in the air we will see him clearly, “face to face” (1Corinthians 13:12). The context of this verse is about believers seeing the Lord “through” the scriptures: not seeing themselves in a mirror!
“His ways are always grievous” ≥ ‘His ways are always prospering’ (Psalm 10:4-5). These verses describe the ways of the wicked.
“not increased the joy” ≥ ‘increased its joy’ (Isaiah 9:3).
“let it not be that outward adorning” ≥ ‘Do not let your adornment be merely outward’ (1Peter 3:3).
“Study to shew thyself approved” ≥ ‘Be diligent to present yourself approved’ (1Peter 3:3).
Jehovah is omitted seven times—‘The name JEHOVAH comes from the Hebrew Tetragrammaton, JHVH, which appears thousands of times in the Old Testament. It is rendered LORD [in the KJB] most of the time, because the Hebrews feared profaning the name of God and violating the Third Commandment. There are seven instances when the context mandates JHVH be expressed explicitly as the name JEHOVAH’ (New Age Bible Versions, Gail Riplinger, 1997).
“JEHOVAH” ≥ ‘LORD’ (Psalm 83:18; Exodus 6:3;
“Jehovahjireh” ≥ ‘LORD’ (Genesis 22:14).
“Jehovahnissi” ≥ ‘The-LORD-Is-My-Banner’ (Exodus 17:15).
“Jehavahshalom ≥ ‘The-LORD-Is-Peace’ (Judges 6:24).
“the LORD JEHOVAH” ≥ ‘JAH, the LORD’ (Isaiah 12:2; 26:4).
The NKJV entirely omits important scriptural words— ‘In the NKJV, there are 22 omissions of “hell”, 23 omissions of “blood”, 44 omissions of “repent”, 50 omissions of “heaven”, 51 omissions of “God”, and 66 omissions of “Lord”. The terms “devils”, “damnation”, “JEHOVAH”, and “new testament” are completely omitted’ (Jesus-Is-Lord.com: the article ‘The NKJV: A Deadly Translation’ by James L. Melton).
‘The [following] changes arise from ‘ecumenical [movement to unite all ‘churches’]’ pressures not from Greek manuscript evidence’ (New Age Bible Versions, Gail Riplinger, 1997):
“Holy Ghost” ≥ ‘Holy Spirit’ (John 7:39; Acts 6:3; 8:18; 11:15-16; 19:2; 1Corinthians 2:13; 1John 5:7).
“Holy Ghost” ≥ ‘the Spirit’ (Matthew 12:31).
‘While passing off as being true to the Textus Receptus, the NKJV IGNORES the Receptus over 1,200 times’ (‘A Deadly Translation,’ by Dr. Michael E. Todd, on 1Timothy4-13.com).
The KJB is not more difficult!—‘Recent evaluation shows the reading level of the King James Bible to be fifth grade, as a whole—many individual passages would be lower. The modern Bibles are shown to be between sixth and ninth grade levels as a whole. The modern versions claim to increase readability when in reality, they often make readability more difficult’ (byfaithweunderstand.com, article titled The Reading Level of the KJV). ‘The preface to the NKJV states that previous ‘revisions’ of the KJV have ‘sought to keep abreast of changes in English speech…[supposedly to make the scripture easier to understand],’ by James L. Melton. See the following changes that make the scripture more difficult instead of easier to understand: “little rivers” ≥ ‘rivulets’ (Ezra 31:4); “Judge” ≥ ‘Vindicate’ (Psalms 43:1); “Thoughts” ≥ ‘anxieties’ (Psalms 139:23); “Fat” ≥ ‘verdant’ (Isaiah 28:1); “smell” ≥ ‘savor’ (Amos 5:21); “box” ≥ ‘flask’ (Matthew 26:7); “the deep” ≥ ‘the abyss’ (Luke 8:31); “did” ≥ ‘performed’ (John 10:41); “pounds” ≥ ‘minas’ (Luke 19:11-27); “judgement hall” ≥ ‘Praetorium’ (John 19:9); “bowels” ≥ ‘entrails’ (Acts 1:18); “deputy” ≥ ‘proconsul’ (Acts 18:12); “uproar” ≥ ‘insurrection’ (Acts 21:38); “boat” ≥ ‘skiff’ (Acts 27:30); “bastard” ≥ ‘illegitimate’ (Hebrews 12:8).
JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH
Justification defined—Noah Webster defines justification as: ‘remission of sin and absolution from guilt and punishment; or an act of free grace by which God pardons the sinner and accepts him as righteous, on account of the atonement of Christ.’ When a man is justified, God declares the man to be righteous. But God would be unjust to declare any man righteous based on his personal worth or works, because, “it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10)!
Justified by faith—When God spoke to Abraham about his seed, “he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness” (Genesis 15:6). The apostle Paul explained that the LORD spoke to Abraham about Christ (Galatians 3:16)! In reference to the justification of all believers, the scripture declares: “Therefore it[justification] is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all” (Romans 4:16). The righteousness of God will be imputed to us also [counted; charged to our account], “if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification” (Romans 4:23-25). When the rulers of the synagogue asked him to speak unto them, the apostle Paul declared the gospel of Christ to them (Acts 13:14-37). Then Paul said, “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man [Jesus Christ] is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses” (Acts 13:38-39; Galatians 2:16; Titus 3:5-7). All men that believe “the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24), “how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1Corinthians 15:3-4), are “justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus” (Romans 3:21-26).
I hope that you will not believe the malicious lies that the Holy Bible cannot be trusted. Although many corrupt bibles do indeed exist, God will never allow men to change his Holy Bible, because God promised to preserve it and keep it pure for all generations! If possible, men will continue to publish more and more corrupt versions of the bible, “but the word of our God shall stand for ever” (Isaiah 40:8) as a bright lighthouse to reveal the truth to “whosoever will” (Revelation 22:17) receive it (1Thessalonians 2:13). I trust you will take this matter seriously, and that you will compare these things and be convinced of the identity of God’s faithfully preserved Holy Bible (Psalm 12:6-7).
